8 Steps to Online Domination

Online domination is just a few steps away.

Online Domination Begins Here

To really dominate online you must do a number of things. Each of these things will then begin to build on each other.

In this article, we will outline eight steps you need to take to see real gains in Google search or on any search engine for that matter.

The eight steps are:

  1. Build a website that is responsive. That is one that will shrink and grow based on the screen size of the user.
  2. The website should be designed to please the search engines from the start. This means including things like lightening fast page speed, information markup like schema and having good, solid navigational hierarchy.
  3. Integrate social media and an email signup form. Social media should provide a way to share as well as a way to follow. Building your email list straight out of the gate is imperative. Capture your audience!
  4. Identify the best keywords to target.
  5. Find the voice for your website and identify your audience.
  6. Offer quality content to your target market.
  7. Get backlinks to your website from relevant sites who care about what you have to offer.
  8. Work off-page to make sure that the name, address and phone number (NAP) for your website are consistent online.

Let’s break it down. The eight steps are easy if you follow these instructions.

Step 1 Build a Responsive Website

Why Responsive?

Nowadays everyone has a smartphone. Your customers will likely look for you on their phone at some point. You must be prepared.

Google recently ran something we in the industry called “Mobilegeddon”. A scary term for a not so scary event. Google gave priority in mobile search to websites that were mobile friendly. It makes perfect sense since Google wants to please its users. It wouldn’t make sense to provide a website that needs squished and pinched to be viewed properly.

There are other options besides responsive. These include adaptive design and creating a separate site just for mobile.

Having a separate mobile website means maintaining two sites, one for desktop and one for mobile. That can be a problem. For one, although Google says they don’t have a preference you could lose some value, or search engine juice, to your website if half of your customers go to the desktop site and half go to your mobile site. It’s better to have all that “juice” pointing to one spot.

Adaptive design takes a professional to implement. It means looking at each section of a web page to decide what belongs on mobile and what doesn’t. Then code needs to be  built that tells the search engines how to display the page correctly. Omitting the parts for the desktop when a user is on their phone.

This is all well and good but can get expensive.

Easy Responsive Website

The easiest way to get a responsive website is to use WordPress. WordPress is a powerful tool that we’ll go into more detail about later. Just know that most WordPress themes are now responsive. So if you use WordPress you are more than likely to have a responsive website. Check the theme you choose for responsiveness.

Step 2 Speed, Schema, and Hierarchy

Once you have picked a responsive WordPress theme you need to set it up properly. There are useful WordPress plugins that will do some of this work for you. Start by uploading Yoast SEO and WP Smushit.

Yoast SEO Plugin

This tool will help you to optimize your site in many ways. One of them is by providing markup to your website. Although it does not do schema, you can do that yourself. Google has tools for that.

What it does give you is the markup that some social media platforms like Facebook will be looking for on your site. They are called “Ogg.” Suffice it to say that Facebook will get a lot of valuable information from this markup. This will help you boost your ranking in Facebook.

This markup happens automatically when you activate this plugin.

So, do that.

WP Smushit Plugin

Images make websites slow. Many people don’t know how to optimize images for website speed.

This simple plugin will make sure your images are not slowing down your website. It is simple to use. Upload it. Activate it and you are done.


Hierarchy refers to the way your website is set up. The top categories are given the most weight.

The main navigation of your website should include your site’s top items or categories. This is the navigation bar that is most often seen along the top of your website. Navigation sends a strong signal regarding what your site is about to Google and to your users.

After listing each of the top categories there you can link to a page that breaks the category down into the details. Internal linking from this page to other pages with the details establishes the hierarchy of your website.

You do NOT want your main navigation to be crowded with every little detail. You want to create a flow that shows Google and your users how to use your site.

Step 3 Social Media and Email

Your website can and should do a lot of things for you. It can help you build your social media following. It can also help build your list. Here we are recommending the JetPack plugin and MailChimp. However, there are many other tools to help you do this. These are just a couple of our favorites.

So let’s take a look at these two tools.

JetPack Plugin

There are many other things that JetPack will do for your site but for now, we will just look at what it does for social media.

Once activated, the JetPack plugin will immediately add share functions to your website. This means your audience can share your website to their social media with a click of a button. It will also keep a count so that you are building social proof as to how popular you are or are becoming.

Jetpack will also share your blog posts to your social media automatically. Blog posts are great for dominating online. WordPress does blogging perfectly since it was built as a blogging platform. However, it is not just a blogging platform anymore.


Your website is your hub. Do not trust other platforms to always provide you with a list of your users. You need to build that list yourself. We recommend MailChimp.

MailChimp is a very popular email marketing tool. It is free for up to 2000 subscribers. So that should be enough to hold you for a little while.

  1. Head on over to MailChimp and sign up for an account. There is no cost to sign up.
  2. Once you have an account you will need to create a list in MailChimp. It is very easy to do and MailChimp will walk you through it. They are very user-friendly.
  3. Then when you have created your list you will need to create a widget in MailChimp. This widget will be for your website. It will collect email addresses and add them to the list you just created.

It’s all very easy to do because MailChimp takes all the guesswork out.

Step 4 Identify Keywords

Here’s the fun part. Now you try to get into the minds of your users or in other words, your audience.

What will they call your product or service?

How do they speak?

Create a list of the words or phrases that your users might use to find you.

Then go to Google and search those terms.

  • A Google search will show you how many responses are available for that term or phrase. If there are a lot of answers available then you know you will have your work cut out for you if you want to reach the first page of Google search.
  • This search will also turn up other meanings for that search term. Maybe you have the wrong phrase. Maybe you do not want to be in those results. For example, a search of “online domination” will turn up Metro Internet Marketing. But it will also turn up a lot of sites that have nothing to do with marketing. Use your imagination. We have decided to go with this term anyway. You may decide differently.

This is going to give you a good start. Sure there are tools for keyword research. We’ll cover them in another article. For now, this will get you started. You probably already know what people say about your business or service. Just start with these few words and phrases.

Step 5 Find Your Voice

You have begun to identify your audience in the previous step. Identifying your keywords will get you inside of your users’ minds.

Now think about how they would string the keywords and phrases together.

Do your users use slang or are they very proper?

Your website needs to reflect the sentiment of your audience. They need to feel at home here.

Step 6 Offer Quality Content 

Today search engines can recognize quality content. Google uses something called Rank Brain which is artificial intelligence. They also use real people to review sites. The real people influence the artificial intelligence.

One sign of quality is the length of your content. If you really want to describe a topic thoroughly it is going to take a lot of words. Today articles with a thousand or more words rank better than those with only a couple hundred.

Don’t just write fluff though. Artificial intelligence can see right through that. If there aren’t a lot of words needed to describe a topic then just stop once you have done a thorough job.

Step 7 Backlinks 

Now the real work begins. Backlinks are where a website other than yours links to your website. This is a signal of authority to the search engines. Some of this will happen naturally.

As you create quality content, people will find it. If they like it they will share it. This is one way to get links back to your site.

Another way is more proactive.

  1. First identify other sites that may be interested in your content.
  2. Then reach out to them to ask for a link.
  3. Don’t just ask for the link. Show them how your content would be of value to their users.

Step 8 NAP & Citations

Once you have gotten this far you have some real juice for the search engines to feast on. Now your doing a little clean up around the edges.

There are thousands of directories online. They are like the yellow pages of old. In fact, one is still  called the Yellow Pages.

  1. Find the ones relevant to you. Start with the big ones like Yellow Pages and Yelp.
  2. Create an account on these platforms.
  3. Look for your information there. If it’s there claim it. If it’s not, create it.
  4. Your name, address and phone number (called NAP) needs to be consistent across these platforms. If not you might confuse the search engines.

There you have it. If you follow these 8 steps you will gradually see your website climb in the search engines. It can take up to six months to begin to see movement in the search results. But it is inevitable.

If you are providing good content, that users need, then Google wants to show you to their users. It’s no secret. They want to do a good job and remain the number one search engine in the Western world.
