To dominate online you need to start with a web property that you own. You could try to dominate online with your Facebook page, for example. But why would you? Facebook is fine for making friends and having conversations. The problem is  that you don’t own Facebook. (Unless it’s you, Mark. Prolly not.) You can’t count on Facebook or any other platform to consistently give you access to your followers. These vehicles change all the time. You need something you can count on.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is sort of a catch-all phrase for the steps you need to take to get your website on the first page of the search engines. Some of these things happen on your website. Others happen off your website. These are called on-page and off-page, respectively.

The SEO of Your Website, On-Page

You have a web hub that you use to dominate online. In order to get your web property to rank well in search engines, there are many things that need to be done. The first step is to consider the web property itself.

These techniques or steps are often called on-page SEO. On-page SEO usually refers to the technical, behind the scenes things that can be done to get a web page to rank.

  • Is your website fast enough? It’s nearly impossible to rank a slow site. There are things that can be done to speed up a site like optimizing images and minifying CSS and javascript.
  • Is it mobile? Nowadays you just can’t rank in mobile search if you don’t have a mobile website. This does not have to be a separate thing. Instead, it is typically done with a certain kind of design called responsive.

On-page may also include jazzing up your existing content. Content is crucial to ranking your website. Creating new content will be an ongoing part of any SEO effort.

SEO, Off-Page

Search engine optimization that does not occur on your website is called off-page SEO. These steps can include things like social media and getting backlinks and mentions.

Social Media Services

Part of this step is not entirely off-page since these changes need to be made on your website.

  • First, your website should be easy to share on social media.
  • It should also be possible to follow or like your social media from your website.
  • New content should push a notice to your social media.

All of these things need to be set up on your website. These steps at a minimum will begin to create engagement. As your users begin to interact with your website content the effect will be felt across the Internet. Search engines are aware of social media activity. The more times your content is shared and engaged with, the more signals the search engines are going to be picking up.

You should make a regular practice of posting to social media beyond just having website content push to social media.You can even set up your email campaigns to notify your social media.

Google My Business Services

This could almost be considered social media. Setting up a Google My Business account used to happen through Google Plus, which is a social media platform.

Google My Business (GMB) is a hub for your basic business data like your name, address and phone number (NAP). It’s also a place for your images, descriptions of your services and more.  This information will almost immediately make its way to Google search because…well, it’s Google.

If you’re a local business then doing this will put your website on the map. This could lead to a big piece of real estate on the search result page. We call it the local pack.

Name, Address, Phone (NAP) Services

Name, address and phone (NAP) are three of the most important things for Local SEO. And certainly for SEO in general.

Training the search engines to understand who you are has a lot to do with how clearly they see this information on the Internet. Conflicting data can hold you down in the search results.

There is even a specific inner circle of four or five sites that feed their data to a number of heavy hitters. This is the local ecosystem. If you are a local business you MUST host your data on these platforms.

You need to use email.

At a minimum, your new content should trigger an email. Especially a blog post.

Collecting email addresses has to be a goal of any website. This gives you direct access to your users. You can send out a meeting invite or a coupon or whatever.

You cannot trust some other platform to reliably reach your users like your own email campaign will.

Pay Per Click (AdWords) Services

Pay per click may be the way you win that keyword that you just have to have. Sometimes that keyword is just out of reach. Or maybe it’s just going to take a little while longer.

If you just have to have it, buy it. It’s not as expensive as you might think.

Compare it to the value of that customer and decide for yourself if it’s worth your effort.
